Hello everyone! It's a very special time in my blog and do you know why? Because I'm introducing a new thing that may or may not become a regular thing! What is this "new thing" you ask? Well... I shall intepret song lyrics. Yeah yeah, it's been done many times before but I shall attempt to interpret the song in a way it has never been interpreted before. And so, for my first song I pick a classic. That great 80s classic Take on Me by Aha.
We're talking away
I don't know what
I'm to say I'll say it anyway
Today's another day to find you
Shying away
I'll be coming for your love, OK?
(chorus)
Take on me, take me on
I'll be gone
In a day or two
So needless to say
I'm odds and ends
But that's me stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is OK.
Say after me
It's no better to be safe than sorry
(chorus)
Oh the things that you say
Is it life or
Just a play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to
remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway
(chorus x2)
This song actually tells a story about a young adolescent boy named Brad. Yes, the boy is not named in the song but if you do some research on the band they had a young boy that brought them towels after thier shows that was named Brad, and this song is a tribute to him. The story starts off innocently enough, Brad is trying to talk to a girl and get past his speech impediment (he's pretty dyslexic and spouts spoonerisms quite often) but everything just comes out in stutters as he rambles on. Unfortunately he's talking up Chad's "girl" (she's not really Chad's girl, he just WANTS her to be) and Chad decides to pick a fight with Brad and the girl (who, interestingly enough, remains unnamed) runs away. Hence her "shying away."
This is where the chorus comes in. Chad challenged Brad to a fight and, in typical dyslexic flair, Brad responds with a "Take on me!" Chad echoes, well sorta echoes, back "Take me on!" Both correcting and challenging Brad at the same time. Brad informs Chad that he'll be gone in a day or two so they have to schedule the fight for some time before that. The fight happens and Brad gets beaten up pretty badly.
So badly, in fact, that he begins to doubt if talking to the girl is even worth the trouble. He is at "odds and ends" debating whether or not the soon to be daily beatings will be worth talking to this girl. Besides, he's leaving in a day or two, so why bother himself? He stumbles home and thinks to himself "Yeah, I'll be gone soon anyway, it'll all be OK."
He has a dream that night in which the fight repeats in his head. He seems himself challenge Chad with the "Take on me" and Brad's "Take me on" response. He analyzes the fight this time and finds a way to defeat Chad! Even though he had earlier decided to just forget about the girl and move on, he decides that she may after all be worth it and that he owes himself another chance with this girl even if it will only last a day or two. He just likes this girl too much, even if she shies away every time he talks to her, he will try anyway!
He returns to school and talks to the girl again. Of course Chad starts a fight again and the story is left with Brad chanting "Take on me..."
